Bournemouth’s Bh2 Leisure has won a prestigious 2024 International Green Apple Environment Award after showing an impressive rise in recycling rates and introducing a series of new waste management measures.

The Awards programme is part of a global campaign to identify and celebrate the greenest companies and the award, jointly presented to Bh2 Leisure and Grundon Waste Management, was selected from over 1,200 nominations worldwide.

Bryan Taylor, Bh2 Centre Manager and Grundon’s James Luckett were presented with the award by Helen Kitchen, from Yealands Wines of New Zealand, winners of The 2024 Green World Environment Awards, in a special ceremony in The Orangery, at Kensington Palace, London, on Monday 18 November.

A delighted Bryan said afterwards: “Sustainability is a year-round priority for us and, together with Grundon, we have worked hard to identify opportunities and implement solutions to reduce waste. Communication with our occupiers has been essential, we have worked hard to make sure the recycling message gets through to everyone and the results speak for themselves.

“We are delighted that our efforts have been recognised by The Green Apple awards and know this will be a huge incentive for our teams to continue striving towards even greater success.”

Opened in 2017 and managed by Savills Property Management, Bh2 Leisure is home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, a cinema and indoor leisure facilities, attracting around two million visitors a year.

Grundon Waste Management was appointed in 2019 to provide waste management services and works closely with the centre’s cleaning team. Occupier education is a major part of the waste programme, with activity including a new occupier recycling and waste handbook to help stop contamination of different waste streams, as well as introducing colour-coded waste bins, stickers and bespoke posters.
As a result, recycling rates have increased steadily year-on-year and zero waste to landfill has been achieved.

Grundon’s James Luckett, said: “We are thrilled to see Bh2 Leisure’s success recognised with this award and well done to all those involved. We are always working hard to make sure everyone embraces the changes they can make to aid recycling and this proves what a great job they are doing.”

The independent judging panel of The Green Apple Awards commented: “Since 2017, Bh2 Leisure in Bournemouth has improved waste management, achieving a 56.9% recycling rate in 2024. Their partnership with Grundon Waste Management saved 33,908 kg of CO2 emissions.”

Both Bh2 Leisure and Grundon now have the opportunity to further their success as a Green World Ambassador and to participate in the Green World Environment Awards, to be held in New Zealand in 2025.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Green Apple Environment Awards, which were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. The award programme has become well established as one of the most popular global environmental campaigns.
